The Mobile Integrated Profiling System (MIPS) is a unique ground-based remote sensing platform, which is used to study a variety of severe and hazardous weather phenomena by researchers in the Severe Weather Institute – Radar & Lightning Laboratories (SWIRLL) at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. YES showcases the latest in automated aircraft upper air sounding equipment. Featuring a compact design, 4 Hz GPS winds, sea-surface temperature sensors, and sophisticated interference-resistant RF telemetry, XDD dropsondes are dispensed up to 80 at a time via the Automated Dropsonde Dispenser (ADD). In November 2013, we successfully flew the HDSS High Definition Sounding System on NASA's high altitude WB-57 aircraft. Meanwhile, the XDR radiosonde's ultralightweight design supports smaller balloons and lower operating costs. Also shown will be the MFR-7 shadowband radiometer with thermopile broadband detector, Total Sky ImagerTM (cloud cover), and the no-moving parts TPS-3100 HotplateTM all-weather measurement system (liquid/solid precipitation via reliable thermodynamics + wind speed, pressure, temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation, and thermal infrared): ideal for aviation weather de-icing operations.
